Predicted Payout
The Hooper Engine's headline recommended settlement amount for a case, adjusted for human factors and expressed in current dollars, shown with its cohort percentile and distance from the median.
Also known as: recommended settlement, recommended settlement amount, predicted settlement
What it is
The predicted payout is the report's headline figure: a single recommended settlement amount for a case that results in payment, adjusted for human factors and expressed in current dollars. It is shown alongside three reference points: the cohort percentile, the distance above or below the median, and the number of similar cases behind it.
How to read it
Read the percentile as closely as the dollar figure. The same amount can be a high-value outlier in one cohort and an ordinary result in another; the percentile tells you which. The predicted payout is the human-adjusted figure, distinct from the expected value, which further weights it by the probability of any payment.
Why it matters
The predicted payout is the number most users take into a settlement conversation. Reading it with its percentile and cohort size, rather than in isolation, is the difference between a defensible anchor and a bare figure.
